Cesária Évora's seventh album, released in 1999 on Lusafrica and reissued here on vinyl by Music On Vinyl, Café Atlantico remains a high point from the barefoot diva, who passed away in 2011. The Cape Verdean singer pours all her mastery of morna and coladeira into these songs — that São Vicente sound where West African percussion meets Portuguese fado, Brazilian modinhas and the salt of the Atlantic. On this side, "Flôr Di Nha Esperança" and "Sorte" move with the melancholy nonchalance that made her unmistakable, while "Carnaval De São Vicente" brings back the heat of her island's streets.
